From WW1 Hero to SS Collaborator: The Fall of Cossack General Shkuro

When Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the war reopened old divisions that had never fully healed after the Russian Civil War. For some former officers of the defeated White movement, it was seen as an opportunity to continue their fight against Soviet power. Among them was Andrei Shkuro, a former Cossack general who had once commanded cavalry units during both the First World War and the Russian Civil War. Known for his bold tactics and unpredictable character, he had spent years in exile after the Bolshevik victory, moving across Europe and trying to rebuild his life far from Russia. The Second World War changed that. As German forces advanced deep into Soviet territory, Shkuro chose to align himself with Nazi Germany. He became involved in organizing Cossack units that would operate under German command, particularly in anti-partisan operations across parts of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. These operations were marked by harsh reprisals and violence against civilians. Shkuro’s role, and the actions of the units connected to him, have since been examined as part of the broader history of collaboration during the war. After the conflict ended, Shkuro was captured and handed over to Soviet authorities. He was later tried and sentenced in Moscow in 1947. His story reflects the difficult choices faced by individuals in times of upheaval—where ideology, personal history, and opportunity could lead to decisions with lasting consequences.
