China is rapidly integrating artificial intelligence into everyday life, from robot baristas and delivery services to traffic management, healthcare and education. AI algorithms increasingly recommend what people watch and buy, assign delivery orders and help match passengers with drivers. Generative AI is also becoming widely used for research, writing, translation and other daily tasks, with about 602 million users in China at the end of last year. That was more than double the number recorded a year earlier and represented about 43 percent of the population. Surveys suggest Chinese people are generally more receptive to AI despite concerns about its risks. Beijing is now seeking to expand its use through its AI Plus strategy, including in homes, consumer technology, healthcare and elderly care. The next stage will see AI move beyond answering questions to carrying out tasks on behalf of users.
