Galeazzo Ciano was one of the most powerful figures in Fascist Italy and one of the closest men to Benito Mussolini during the years leading to the Second World War. As Italy’s foreign minister and the husband of Mussolini’s daughter Edda, Ciano stood at the centre of the Fascist regime during some of the most decisive moments in modern European history. Yet the same man who helped strengthen Italy’s alliance with Nazi Germany would later vote against his own father-in-law and become one of the highest-ranking Fascists to fall from power. This documentary explores the life and political career of Galeazzo Ciano, from his privileged upbringing in a wealthy Fascist family to his rapid rise within Mussolini’s inner circle. Educated in Rome and later employed in the diplomatic service, Ciano served in China before marrying Edda Mussolini in 1930, a union that transformed him into a central figure of the regime. Charming, ambitious, and deeply connected to Fascist power structures, he became foreign minister at the age of thirty-three. The film examines Ciano’s role in the growing alliance between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, including his meetings with Adolf Hitler and Joachim von Ribbentrop, as well as Italy’s entry into the war alongside the Axis powers. It also explores his private doubts about the conflict, preserved in the famous Ciano Diaries, which later became one of the most important insider accounts of the Fascist leadership during the war. As military defeats mounted and Italy moved toward collapse, Ciano turned against Mussolini and supported the vote that removed the dictator from power in July 1943. But in Fascist Italy, loyalty and betrayal often carried the same consequences. The documentary follows the dramatic final chapter of Ciano’s life, his arrest, trial in Verona, and the political struggles that ended with his downfall in 1944.
