Rwandan-backed M23 rebels are withdrawing from Uvira in eastern DRC, following their capture of the town last week.
The group stated it would leave if a neutral force were deployed to maintain security, amid pressure from the US and ongoing peace talks.
M23 currently controls major urban hubs in the region, including the border crossing with Burundi, and has been advancing south.
Residents are cautiously reopening shops and resuming daily life, while welcoming the withdrawal.
Many remain uncertain about the rebels’ full plans and whether peace will be maintained in Uvira.
M23 has said the pullout will be gradual to ensure the local population’s protection.
The town now awaits clarity on who will assume responsibility and how the peace process will proceed.
