What If Everything You Know About Depression Was Wrong? | Op-Ed | NowThis

Everything you know about depression could be wrong.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

Johann Hari always wondered if there was more to people’s depression than what was being advertised/normalized. So, he started what turned into a 4,000 mile journey to find the answer. Like many, including celebrities, Hari felt confused when it came to handling his depression.

“When I was a teenager, until I went to my doctor, I had thought my depression was all in my head, meaning it was a sign of weakness, it was shameful,” he explained. “It’s not in our heads. If you’re depressed, if you’re anxious, you’re not crazy. You’re a human being with unmet needs.”

Hari began to explore what really causes depression in his book Lost Connections. As a child, he was told that his depression was due to a lack of serotonin in his brain. After he was given anti-depressants, he felt better, but found that the sad thoughts began to leak back in until he went back for a higher dose. He later discovered that our moods may be product of up to nine different factors, seven of which are in our psychology and our environment. These include feeling lonely, feeling controlled at work, and not getting enough access to the natural world.

He explained, “And while certainly chemical antidepressants have some value, and should remain on the table, we need to radically expand the menu of options for people who are depressed and anxious to actually deal with the deep, underlying reasons why we feel this way.”

Andrew Yang on Universal Basic Income and Why He’s Running On It For President | Op-Ed | NowThis

This man believes universal basic income could save our economy — so he’s running for President of the United States.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

Andrew Yang founded Venture for America — a program that places new graduates at startups. Now he’s running for president with the hope of implementing universal basic income.

“If enough Americans come together, raise our hands and say, ‘yes, we want universal basic income,’ then we can make it happen in 2021 and it would be the first thing I do as president,” he explained.

Universal basic income allows every American citizen to get a certain amount of money every month, regardless of work status. Under Yang’s plan, every American between the ages of 18 and 64 would receive $1,000 a month.

“We’re going through the greatest technological and economic shift in our history, and we need to accelerate our society and government to keep pace with the challenges of 2020,” Yang stated. “We’ve already automated away millions of manufacturing jobs and we’re about to do the same thing for workers in retail, truck driving, call centers, fast food restaurants, and on and on throughout the economy.”

Yang believes that, since our economy is up to $19 trillion in size, that we can easily afford $1,000 per adult per month. The income would also help level the playing field in terms of economic status, which he believes will give way to more social justice.

Bollywood Should Do More Movies Like Veere Di Wedding | Op-Ed | NowThis

Here’s why this progressive, women-led Bollywood movie is the change the industry needs.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

There are plenty of iconic Bollywood films like “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” — but “Veere Di Wedding” is a completely different kind of Bollywood film.

The movie has four female leads who question society’s expectations of them. Their names are Kalindi, Avni, Sakshi, and Meera and they each deal with very relatable problems — like pressure from their parents to get married, feeling stuck in relationships, and being a commitment-phobe.

The film’s script and themes have been pretty polarizing for featuring casual sex, an openly gay couple, divorce, drinking, and masturbation. But, despite the drama, the film is definitely significant for having the courage to venture into uncharted Bollywood territory. The aforementioned themes have been presented in plenty of movies that have male leads — but woman should be able to have fun, enjoy their friendships, and explore their sexuality just as much as men can.

The movie is also breaking a ton of records, and was one of the top 5 openers or 2018, coming in third. It also hit about $8 million in under a week. Though femme-friendly Bollywood films have existed in the past, they haven’t had the narrative style that “Veere Di Wedding” does. So check out the talked-about film and cast in theaters, if you’re curious about the hype.

CEO Natalie Egan created the Translator platform to combat bias and workplace discrimination and promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Egan says, “It’s about equality for all. And we have a thesis at Translator that through technology and only through technology can we reach that type of state as a human race.”

In order to support the trans community and make positive change occur for all marginalized individuals, according to Egan, we must first be able to measure the impact of diversity and inclusion, in a way that provides concrete data that can inform a CEO’s decision making – and that’s where Translator comes in.

SCOTUS Travel Ban Ruling Creates a Dangerous Path for Legal Discrimination | Op-Ed | NowThis

The scariest part of the Supreme Court’s travel ban ruling: It enables legal discrimination.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

The third version of President Trump’s travel ban, targeting Muslim majority countries, has now been upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States. Nowthis’ Zahra Haider explains how this is not the first time the U.S. has used the law to explicitly exclude a minority group from our society. In 1944, the Korematsu vs the United States SCOTUS ruling lead to the internment of tens of thousands of Japanese Americans.

“We are talking about the legal discrimination of people based on their racial and religious affiliations. This country was built on the notion that we all have a right to our beliefs. At the very least our government is suppose to uphold that principle.”

Da Bomb Bath Fizzers: Sisters Start Million Dollar Bath Bomb Company | Young Hustle | NowThis

Sisters, Isabel and Caroline Bercaw, started a multi-million dollar bath bomb company as pre-teens.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

These sisters started a multimillion-dollar business from a $25 investment. Caroline and Isabel Bercaw are co-founders of Da Bomb Bath Fizzers. The “sisterpreneurs” started the company when they were just 10 and 11 years old. They are now 15 and 16 years old.

“Growing up, we used to use bath bombs a lot. The bath bombs left kind of a residue in the tub so we decided to formulate a recipe ourselves. We’re making around 500,000 bath bombs a month. But it’s not just us. We also have over 150 employees,” one of the co-founding sisters said.

The girls recently donated some proceeds to clean up the ocean with sales of their Earth Bomb:

“Something that we really wanted to put our business was that charitable aspect. We’re always super passionate about giving back and contributing to cleaning up the oceans because it has been a problem for a while now and we really wanted to give back.”

They went on to state, “A lot of times little girls will come up to us and they’ll say, ‘How did you do this? I want to do this too,’ and that was really surprising to us but also really cool. We got to share our story with other people and hopefully inspire them.”
