Marine Veteran Alexander McCoy On Trump’s ‘Political Props’ | Op-Ed | NowThis

‘[Trump] doesn’t actually care about us. What he cares about is using us.’ — Marine vet Alexander McCoy is sick of veterans being used as political props.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

‘I can’t stand to be used as a political prop and most veterans feel the same way. Donald Trump doesn’t actually have our backs.

He doesn’t actually care about us. What he cares about is using us to use us as a shield from criticism. To use us to hide how un-American his ideas are, to use us to divide Americans against each other, and to support ideas that would purge our society of the very things that can bring us together.’

Alexander McCoy is an organizer with Common Defense, a grassroots organization of veterans fighting for progressive values

“I served six years in the Marine Corps. And when I got out in 2013, I wanted to find a new purpose. In the military, you get a sense of, you know, making a difference and being part of something bigger than yourself. And I just didn’t find that once I got out until I started fighting to make my community better. And that’s why I got involved as an organizer working together with fellow veterans who are so often used by politicians on both parties as political props and tokens. And that’s something that frustrates me deeply. That’s something that we need to change. And the only way we can change that is by veterans like me coming together and speaking out for ourselves.

We stand up for progressive values of standing up for working people not corporations not PACs not the rich. We stand up for equality, LGBT rights, women’s rights, the #MeToo movement ending sexual assault. We stand up against racial discrimination and bigotry and we fight for an America that aligns with what we wanted, what we believe in when we served. So we do that by coming together in our communities by speaking out by organizing ourselves because so much of the political establishment has abandoned talking to real people.

When I knock on a door and the person I’m talking to maybe identifies as a conservative or a Republican or even an Independent when I tell them that I was a Marine Corps veteran often they’ll give me a second look. They’ll actually listen to what I have to say and it’s a way of breaking down some of the barriers that have emerged in our country. […] Often what you see is candidates and organizations saying we’re so divided, right? We’re so tribalist, we don’t talk to each other. But those same organizations are not addressing the reasons for that. They just want us to stop complaining. They want us to stop standing up for the things we believe in and they want to go back to a failed system where corporations and the rich are controlling all our lives and rigging our economy against us. I believe in something different. Because I’m a Marine Corps veteran, nobody can question the fact that I believe in my community and that I’m willing to put others first. And so you’ll hear when I talk to somebody they’ll give me a second look. Even if we don’t share the same party even if we don’t share the same way of self identifying what I’ve found is that most people in this country share a lot of the same values. We want the same things. We want reliable healthcare. We want wages to keep up. We want to be able to make ends meet. We want to protect our families and we want to be safe and I can relate to that, but too many politicians try to use fear and bigotry to divide us so that we’re distracted and so that we turn against each other so that they can keep rigging the rules against us.’

A mental health clinical office has opened inside the Carrollton, Texas, Walmart location to make mental health care more accessible and routine. Dr. Russ Petrella, CEO of Beacon Health Options, wants to meet people where they already are and already have relationships, places that are part of their daily routine. He’s hoping opening a mental health clinic in a Walmart will be less intimidating for people. Petrella hopes to de-stigmatize mental health and make it more like physical health treatment. The Walmart is staffed with a clinical social worker who treats stressors like anxiety, depression, grief, and relationship issues.

Senator Sherrod Brown Responds to GM Job Cuts | Op-Ed | NowThis

Sen. Sherrod Brown just called out the Trump administration for abandoning workers affected by the GM layoffs.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH): ‘The same week that General Motors announced the stopping of production where only 5,000 workers at the [General Motors] plant in Lordstown, Ohio, North East, Ohio would lose their jobs, Wall Street celebrated. The stock price for General Motors went up. That’s the problem with our economy. There is no interest from the federal government, from the Trump administration.

When you love your country you fight for the people who make it work. That’s all workers whether you punch a clock, whether you work for tips, whether you’re on salary, whether you swipe a badge, whether you’re taking care of an aging parent or raising children, the dignity of work says to me if you work hard in this country, you ought to be able to get ahead. Instead, we have this phony populism coming out of the White House … the White House looks like a retreat for Wall Street executives.

About a year ago I was at the White House and I suggested to the president and then followed up and handed him the bill, the Patriot Corporation Act. It’s really simple — if you’re a company in the United States and you pay good wages, you provide benefits, and you make your product in the United States, you get a lower tax rate. I handed that bill to the president and he said he liked it. Unfortunately, the tax bill ended up in the majority leader’s office, Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office, and was written by corporate lobbyists who went in the exact opposite direction.

If a plant closes down in Youngstown, Ohio and moves to Mexico, in essence, it gets a 50% off coupon on its taxes. It pays half the tax rate if it moves overseas. I spoke to the president … I asked him to cancel that tax break that was in his tax law and take the money from that tax break that companies get that move overseas and invest that money, put that money in the pockets of Americans who are buying cars. When they buy cars in the United States, they ought to get a break on those cars. Don’t put the incentives on General Motors to move offshore. Put the incentives on American car buyers to buy American. That will make a huge difference.

I asked the president to pass the American Cars, American Jobs act. That’s pretty simple too. It simply says we’re going to end this tax break that companies get that move overseas, they get 50% savings on their taxes if they move overseas. And instead, it’s going to redirect those dollars into the pockets of car buyers and the pockets of middle class Americans, the pockets of working Americans when they buy cars made in the United States. The Patriot Corporation Act plus the American Cars American Jobs act is going to help us strengthen the middle class, it’s going to help people aspire to join the middle class. It’s about American workers, not about American companies that send jobs overseas.’

Deep Canvassing Helped Elect Democrat Max Rose in Staten Island | NowThis

Progressive political campaign tried to change people’s minds by having deep, personal conversations door-to-door — and it worked for Max Rose.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

A progressive group tried something new when it came to knocking on doors and canvassing for the midterm elections.

Most campaigns hurry from door to door, urging committed party voters to the polls. But “deep canvassers” cultivate longer conversations, hoping to persuade swing voters.

“There’s a confirmation bias out there within the world of politics that persuasion is not worth it, but I think the vast majority of people are decent human beings and care about other human beings,” explained Changing The Conversation Together director Adam Barbanel-Fried. “And I feel like if we can’t figure out how to build a commonality around that, how are we ever going to build a better political future for ourselves?”

Changing the Conversation Together targeted Staten Island, which is the most conservative part of New York City’s only swing district. 10 days before the midterm, the GOP candidate was leading the polls. But the group was training volunteers to turn that around.

“If you’re in the world of facts, opinions, or arguments, it’s probably not gonna work. And you’ve derailed the whole project,” Barbanel-Fried explained to volunteers. “So we’re gonna work really hard today on learning how do we stay in this relational space.”

Oakland University Gives Out Hockey Pucks in Case of School Shooting | NowThis

Oakland University gave students and staff hockey pucks to defend themselves if there’s a shooting.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

Oakland University is arming students with hockey pucks in case there’s a shooting.

Mina Fuqua: ‘At first it sounded like the funniest thing ever, you know, how they were going to use these hockey pucks, make sure you have one to prepare yourself for a school shooting. I just didn’t see how that would be something as helpful.’

Oakland University in Michigan came up with the idea to hand out hockey pucks after an active shooter training session for faculty members.

One means of fighting the Chief discusses is throwing heavy objects to distract, hurt, or discourage an attacker. At a recent training, he used the example of a hockey puck, which individuals can easily carry on their person.

‘Oakland University wishes to emphasize and reiterate that the idea of fighting an armed attacker with a hockey puck was offered in the context of a last line of defense in an active shooter situation.’ -Statement from Oakland University

Mina Fuqua: ‘Even if I have a hockey puck on me i might not think like, oh I’m going to use this, you know what I mean? God forbid the situation ever happens but if a school shooting was to take place we could use whatever was in our reach.’

The university, which has a no-weapons policy, says faculty members elected to buy 800 pucks for their colleagues and another 1,700 for students, all paid for by the faculty union.

Mina Fuqua: ‘I’m glad Oakland University is taking some steps towards preparing people because I know school shootings are getting more common it seems, but i’m just grateful that they feel the need to do something about it even if it’s something as simple or as silly sounding as hockey pucks. That’s the first step. Eventually I feel like there will be more kind of serious measures taken or more realistic measures taken. ‘

Bill Nye the Science Guy on Trump’s Climate Change Denial | NowThis

Bill Nye is just as frustrated as you are with Donald Trump’s climate change denial — but he’s confident the next generation of progressives will bring about action.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

Bill Nye: ‘With as much respect as I can muster, the president doesn’t seem to want to keep a thought in his head for very long.

Sooner or later, the floods, the hurricanes, the fires, everybody’s fed up with it.

And if you’re a farmer in the heartland, you’re noticing that parasites and pests are showing up sooner in the growing season and sticking around longer, and that costs you money.

So everybody’s gonna realize that these predictions that climate scientists have been making for decades are coming true right now, so let’s address this.

[Climate scientist] James Hansen testified in front of U.S. Congress on June 30, 1988 about climate change.

About a year later, the U.S. had 13 agencies get together in the climate, what’s it called, U.S. [Global Change Research Program]. 13 agencies—all addressing climate change during conservative, Republican administrations, this thing was created.

So, if we just decide to address climate change, we can. Let’s go! This will be a national pride! This could be cool! C’mon! It’s exciting! But the fossil fuel industry has been very successful in introducing doubt that scientific uncertainty, plus or minus 1.5%, is the same as plus or minus 100%, is just wrong, and everybody, I think now, as much as trouble, and hardship, and death, and economic misery that the floods, the fires, and the hurricanes have caused, there may be an opportunity for people to realize all these predictions from climate scientists are coming true.’

Robert Reich on Trump’s Myth that Immigrants Don’t Pay Taxes | Op-Ed | NowThis

Foreign-born Americans pay more than $300 billion in taxes — but Trump still insists immigrants are a drain on our resources.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

President Donald Trump wants you to think that immigrants and undocumented immigrants don’t pay taxes and are draining social security resources. This is simply not true. Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich explains that foreign-born Americans pay more than $300 billion in federal, state, and local taxes, according to the most recent data. In 2015, undocumented immigrants paid an estimated $24 billion in federal taxes and another $11 billion in property taxes, and state and local taxes. Undocumented immigrants contributed $15 billion in Social Security taxes every year even though they are ineligible to receive those benefits. More immigration is good for the economy.

Baby Turtles Struggle to Swim Through Plastic Pollution in Honduras | NowThis

Pollution has ruined this baby sea turtle’s home. Photographer Caroline power took these videos of baby sea turtles as they struggled in plastic trash. Unfortunately not all of them survived.

“This seaweed was filled with plastic. It was disgusting. I found baby turtles resting on plastic bags and on gallon bottles. Others were crawling across the top of plastic filled seaweed. Others had died and were floating, wrapped in plastic.”

Last year the same area went viral for plastic pollution. But litter from Honduras & Nicaragua is still washing into the ocean. The baby sea turtles live in Sargassum seaweed. It provides them with food and protects them from predators. If the seaweed washes ashore the turtles can suffocate and die.

Caroline saved 18 babies from the seaweed and sent them to a turtle rehabilitation center where all 18 are still alive. 8 Million tons of plastic enter the ocean from land each year.

How This Artist Wants to Fight Climate Change in Miami | NowThis

This Miami art installation by Misael Soto is challenging people to face the realities of climate change, before their city ends up underwater.
» Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe

Miami Beach is using art to help fight climate change.

Misael: At the end of the day, Miami wants to be here, and capitalism’s gonna push for it to stay here. So my job is to hopefully understand, in the broadest sense, what the possibilities are, and try to get people to see those possibilities.

The Art Center of South Florida teamed up with the city of Miami Beach to create a year-long art residency.

Elizabeth: This is the first time where we’ve actually had an artist come in and work with city staff, really connect into the community over the course of this next year, to bring art and the challenges of climate change to life.

Miami’s sea level could rise 1-3 feet by 2060 (Southeast Florida Regional Climate). More than 10% of Miami-Dade County is within 1 foot of sea level, about 20% is within 2 feet of sea level, and 25% is within 3 feet of sea level.

Misael: They have asked me to give my take, to be present at meetings, to get to know people at City Hall, to learn what’s happening at different stages of development, and sea-level rise, and flood relief mitigation efforts.

A couple of years ago, I kind of landed on this idea of re-appropriating ubiquitous objects, so things that are expected in a space, and then kind of glitching them – doing something to affect how people see those objects in that moment and after that.

I eventually landed on sand – sand being the main thing that created Miami Beach. Miami Beach, most of it, is all on land that shouldn’t have been here. It’s not – it’s not real.

Miami Beach is man-made. Thus, the city must replenish its sand periodically in a process called beach renourishment

Miseal: What I’ve proposed then is to repurpose sand that will be used by the city for beach renourishment – repurpose it and use it to fill sandbags, and with those sandbags I will be building, day by day over the course of approximately two months, a theater which initially will seem like a large, curved wall, and eventually will build out a theater, and that theater will then be used for public programming that will hopefully get a lot of various stakeholders, and knowledgeable folk, all the way up to residents, and passersby, and tourists to see this issue and kind of be in the same space.

Super PACs are pouring money in, millionaires, billionaires. You don’t know where it comes from because they’re hiding the ball. We need transparency and disclosure so that you the voter know where this is coming from and you can make decisions based on that.

Ethics reforms: The second thing we’re going to do is we’re going to make sure that when people come to serve in Washington, they serve with integrity. … we have to strengthen the Office of Government Ethics, give it some enforcement power so it can make sure that people are acting in the public trust. … We need to focus on lobbying activity as well. Lobbyists have way too much influence here in Washington. So we’ve got to make sure they behave and if they’re going to get into the lobbying business, if they’re going to be advocating on behalf of some special private interests, they better raise their hand and register and disclose what they’re doing.

Voter suppression: Third we have to make it easy not harder to vote in America…. We’ve got to push back on voter suppression which means that certain communities get targeted in a way that will stop them from getting out and exercising their right to vote. So we’ve got to strengthen the Voting Rights Act that’s absolutely fundamental here. We’ve got to make it easy to register to vote. Automatic voter registration is absolutely critical to that. … We’ve got to bolster election security because there are these new concerns about people hacking into our election system. So we’ve got to make sure election security is there so that you have confidence that when you cast the vote it will actually be tabulated and counted. … And we got to address this partisan gerrymandering that we’ve seen across the country because people are are rightly resentful of that.

According to public defender Scott Hechinger, the cash bail system is a national crisis that needs to end. Judges decide whether to hold suspects and what to set their bail at based solely on allegations and criminal history, with no regard for who that individual is and their financial circumstances. Hechinger says that 87% of his clients can’t afford bail. 500,000 people are detained pretrial only because they can’t afford to buy their freedom. Bail is supposed to be a incentive not a punishment. As long as you come back to court on your court dates, you get the money back. One of Hechinger’s clients was held on Rikers Island for 9 months because he couldn’t afford $7,500 bail.
