The Canton Fair 2025 was supposed to show China’s trade resilience— the world’s largest trade show. While Chinese state media and influencers boast of global dominance, our footage tells a different story: sparse foot traffic, missing European and American buyers, and exhibitors quietly packing up days early.

Organizers scrambled to control the optics—issuing desperate notices against early booth dismantling, then quietly backing down when the halls stayed quiet.

Official figures seemed to reinforce the sense of optimism. By April 8, nearly 170,000 overseas buyers had pre-registered for the fair. Organizers highlighted that 72% of these came from Belt and Road countries, 27.4% from BRICS nations, 14.3% from Middle Eastern countries, and just 10.5% from Europe and the United States. By April 14, the number of pre-registered foreign buyers had climbed past 200,000.
On paper, these numbers suggested robust international interest.
But on the ground, the reality was far less encouraging.

If this is China “winning” the trade war, why does it feel like a quiet collapse?
