Spain has begun installing a 500-metre floating barrier off the coast of its North African enclave of Ceuta following an unprecedented migrant surge that left at least 67 people dead and reignited a political debate across the European Union over border security and migration policy.
Spanish officials said migrant crossings into Ceuta came to a halt overnight, with soldiers and police deployed to patrol the largely deserted Tarajal beach. Authorities estimate that around 50,000 migrants crossed into the enclave by land and sea from Morocco since Thursday, marking one of the largest mass crossings ever recorded at one of the European Union’s only land borders with Africa.
