US President Donald Trump has called on Congress to pass legislation imposing tougher penalties for fraud involving Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security programs.
In a video posted on the White House YouTube channel, Trump called for mandatory minimum prison sentences for those convicted of stealing from federal benefit programmes, with longer sentences based on the amount stolen. He also proposed doubling sentences for repeat offenders.
Trump further called for state and local politicians to face personal financial liability if they knowingly fail to act on fraud they have the ability to stop.
“From now on, fraudsters, we’re watching you,” Trump said, outlining his proposed crackdown on benefit-program fraud and what he described as political inaction.
