The city of Buriticupu in the northeast of the Brazilian Amazon is being swallowed by massive sinkholes. Around 1,200 people of a population of 55,000 are now at risk of losing their homes. The recent sinkholes are an escalation of the calamity that the city has been facing for the past 30 years. The large soil erosions led to an emergency decree earlier this month.
