A plume of black smoke has billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signalling that the first vote of Conclave failed to select a new Pope.
This means that none of the cardinals received the required two thirds of the vote.
There is only one round of voting on the first day, so that’s it until tomorrow – when the cardinals could vote up to four times.
