The Central Government has issued strict new SIM-binding rules that will change how WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and other messaging apps work in India.
Apps can no longer run without the active SIM card inside the device, meaning no more using WhatsApp on phones with different SIMs, no more device-switching freedom, and auto-logouts from web versions every 6 hours.
The DoT says these steps were necessary to stop cyber frauds originating from outside India, where messaging apps were being misused without SIM verification.
Key highlights:
SIM must always remain linked to the device running the app
Apps get 90 days to implement SIM-binding
Web WhatsApp to auto-log out every 6 hours
Compliance report must be submitted in 120 days
Non-compliance will invite legal action under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 and Cyber Security Rules, 2024
