Students in Jonai, Assam, are being forced to cross the Kemi River by boat to reach school after a bridge was damaged on June 28. Teachers say more than half of the students at Kemi-Jelam Middle English School come from villages across the river. With boats not always available on time, children are sometimes forced to crowd into boats or cross the river on foot, leaving their clothes and books wet. The situation is also affecting teachers and school staff who commute from the other side of the river.
