Argentina: Students protest Milei austerity as university funding dispute escalates

Students and lecturers across Argentina have taken to the streets in protest against sweeping austerity measures introduced by President Javier Milei, demanding the government implement a university financing law already approved by Congress.

The legislation, which would increase funding for public universities, has not been enacted. The government says fiscal constraints and its commitment to a zero-deficit policy under an International Monetary Fund-backed reform programme make implementation impossible.

Universities warn that budget cuts are already disrupting academic operations, affecting classes and essential services, while educators accuse the government of ignoring legally approved spending frameworks. Students say the changes are threatening access to Argentina’s long-standing tuition-free public university system, a cornerstone of social mobility for decades.

As demonstrations spread, the dispute highlights growing tensions between austerity policies and public service provision in Argentina, with critics warning of long-term consequences for education and inequality.
