Labour’s Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election, paving the way for him to challenge Keir Starmer as prime minister.
“Everyone knows that politics isn’t working,” he said during his victory speech.
Burnham gained almost 25,000 votes, beating Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 votes.
