LIVE: Heavy Snow Hits Areas Along Sea of Japan, Officials Warn to Stay Vigilant for Avalanches

Areas of central and northern Japan were hit with heavy snowfall as a cold snap brought freezing temperatures across the country. Snowfall has affected traffic conditions in some prefectures, resulting in the delay of some high speed rail trains, local media has reported. The Yamagata Shinkansen line, that runs from Tokyo to Yamagata Prefecture, was suspended for awhile on Friday morning due to heavy snow, but resumed services at around 11 a.m. (0200 GMT). Some parts of northern Niigata prefecture have already been inundated with heavy snowfall over the past few days, local newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported. The central city of Nagoya city is now seeing snowfall for the first time in two years, according to local media.
