The burning down of the Eagle’s Nest is a great loss to history, but it is only the most recent example in the last 80 years of efforts to remove traces of Hitler from his former mountain home despite good arguments to preserve buildings to help educate future generations about the Nazi period and the Allied victory in 1945. Strong debate has raged in Germany over the issue of Nazi-era buildings, and the case of the Eagle’s Nest will cause a new round of debate and soul-searching over the question of restoration or demolition of this important historical site.
