She Hunted for the SS — Then Smiled at Trial Before Reckoning Came

In April 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Norway, beginning five years of occupation during which the Norwegian resistance fought against German rule. But some Norwegians chose a different path, collaborating with the occupiers and helping German intelligence infiltrate the underground movement. Among them was Kitty Grande, a young Norwegian woman whose involvement with one of the country’s most notorious collaborationist networks would eventually lead to her own imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp. Born Kitty Margarete Sørensen in 1919, she joined the fascist Nasjonal Samling party in May 1941. The following year, she became involved with Henry Rinnan’s intelligence organisation, known as the Rinnan gang, which operated on behalf of the German Security Service, or SD. Using the false identity Gerd Engan, Kitty posed as a resistance member and welcomed underground contacts into her Trondheim apartment. Her home became part of an elaborate intelligence operation designed to identify those opposing the German occupation. Even her mother became involved in Rinnan’s activities. However, Kitty’s loyalty began to change in late 1942. After reportedly falling in love with a resistance member, she warned people targeted by the organisation and increasingly distanced herself from its operations. In December 1942, she was arrested and subsequently deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp. Released in August 1943, she returned to Norway, where further personal tragedies awaited her. Following Germany’s defeat in 1945, Kitty faced trial for her collaboration. In September 1946, she received a twenty-year sentence of forced labour but was released in 1951. She subsequently settled in Sweden, where she lived until her death in 1999. Decades later, her wartime activities remained controversial, particularly after a newspaper interview appeared under the headline “I Don’t Regret It.” Her story remains one of Norway’s most striking examples of collaboration, deception and shifting loyalties during the Second World War.
This World War II history documentary explores Kitty Grande’s biography, her relationship with Henry Rinnan, the methods used by the German security services against the Norwegian underground, and the complicated circumstances surrounding her imprisonment and trial.

Her story reveals how collaboration, personal relationships and shifting loyalties shaped individual lives during the Nazi occupation of Norway.
