Former Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa Urges Probe to Assess Impact of Mass Voter Deletions

Former Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa Urges Probe to Assess Impact of Mass Voter Deletions.

Amid the opposition’s demand to nullify the Assembly elections held after the Election Commission of India (ECI) began the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral votes a former Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa has mooted an idea of constituting a commission of inquiry to assess whether mass deletion of voters affected the election outcome. He said that if a link between discrepancies in voter lists in certain constituencies in West Bengal and the poll outcome is established fresh elections would be warranted.

In an exclusive interview with ‘The Free Press Journal’, Lavasa said there is no provision in the law to allow blanket order voiding complete election. However, he pointed that there is a scope to find out if a phase of the SIR has been implemented incorrectly. He also said that the Supreme Court of the ECI could pause and scrap the third phase of the SIR.
