Taiwan has received the first two of its new F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States, marking the first arrivals in a long-delayed order of 66 aircraft worth around $8 billion. The jets landed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung after flying through Hawaii and Guam, as Taiwan continues to strengthen its air defenses amid frequent Chinese military activity around the island.
The F-16Vs feature upgraded avionics, radar and weapons systems designed to improve Taiwan’s ability to monitor and respond to advanced Chinese aircraft, including the J-20. Taiwan’s defence minister says more F-16Vs are expected to arrive, while the full order would eventually push Taiwan’s F-16 fleet above 200 aircraft.
The delivery comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, adding another significant development to the ongoing U.S.-China tensions over Taiwan and American arms sales to the island.
