Watch this video as Firstpost explains how an unofficial September 30 deadline demanding that undocumented migrants leave South Africa has sparked widespread fear and uncertainty across foreign national communities nationwide. Although the ultimatum issued by anti-migrant groups—such as the ‘March and March’ movement—lacks legal backing, it has heightened tensions on the ground. Recent confrontations during a ‘clean-up campaign’ in Durban resulted in violent scuffles, multiple injuries, and arrests. The crisis extends beyond domestic turmoil, sparking a severe diplomatic rift between South Africa and Nigeria following the deaths of 12 Nigerian citizens this year. In response, Nigeria’s legislature has suspended all official engagements with South African authorities. Despite ongoing state deportations, critics contend that political figures are manipulating xenophobic rhetoric to gain leverage ahead of the November 4 municipal elections, leaving vulnerable asylum seekers with little protection and a fraught, unpredictable future. Alyson Le Grange brings you more on this story on Firstpost Africa.
