A total of 164 UN member states has backed a non-binding resolution promoting the Equal Earth projection, a world map designed to more accurately reflect the true size of Africa and many countries in the Global South than the Mercator projection. Put forward by Togo on behalf of the African Union, the campaign turned what might seem like a technical debate over maps into a broader discussion about colonial legacies and geopolitical power.
