Howard Lutnick, US secretary of commerce, said the US could reach 40% to 50% domestic semiconductor production by the end President Trump term if Intel is successful, as he pushes chipmakers to build in America or face tariffs. Sec. Lutnick also pushed back on concerns about data centers’ water use, arguing communities that embrace them will benefit economically and pinning opposition on disinformation. Sec. Lutnick also detailed the dramatic breakdown in trade negotiations with Canada, saying that the trade deal with Canada fell apart hours before it was set to be signed, and accusing Canadian officials of backing away for domestic political reasons.
