Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, who has died at the age of 89 after more than three decades on the throne. The Royal Palace said Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday. Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V, and was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch. He was widely admired for modernising Norway’s royal household and making the monarchy more open and inclusive. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, has automatically succeeded him and becomes King Haakon VIII, marking the beginning of a new era for the Norwegian monarchy.
