Mumbai’s trees are now under renewed scrutiny after the Union Environment Ministry directed the Maharashtra Forest Department to examine complaints over concretisation around roadside trees across the city.
The direction came after Mumbai-based advocate and environmental activist Godfrey Pimenta approached the Ministry, raising concerns that several trees have little or no exposed soil around their bases. The Ministry has asked the Forest Department to examine the complaint, take action under existing laws and court directions, and submit an Action Taken Report.
