In early 1941, two years after the start of the Second World War, Amsterdam was under Nazi occupation, and tensions in the city were rapidly escalating. This documentary explores the life and death of Hendrik Koot, a Dutch fascist collaborator whose actions—and eventual death—became a turning point in the history of the Netherlands during World War II. Born in Amsterdam in 1898, Koot later joined the National Socialist Movement (NSB), aligning himself with Nazi ideology. On 11 February 1941, he took part in a provocative march through Amsterdam’s Jewish quarter, an event that led to a violent clash. Koot was severely injured and died three days later. What followed was far more significant than the incident itself. Nazi authorities and collaborators used Koot’s death as a propaganda tool, spreading false narratives to justify harsher repression against the Jewish population. Within days, the Jewish quarter was sealed off, and mass arrests began. Hundreds of Jewish men were deported to concentration camps such as Buchenwald and Mauthausen. At the same time, public outrage led to one of the most remarkable acts of resistance in occupied Europe—the February Strike of 1941. Workers across Amsterdam and surrounding areas protested against the persecution and deportation of Jews, marking a rare and powerful moment of collective defiance. This video examines how a single event was transformed into a political instrument, and how propaganda, collaboration, and resistance intersected during one of the darkest periods in Dutch history.
