Avalanche on broad peak kills legendary climber Nims Purja and Nine Others

Ten mountaineers, including world-renowned climber Nirmal “Nims” Purja, have died after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in northern Pakistan.

The avalanche hit between Camp 2 and Camp 3 at an altitude of approximately 6,600 metres, sweeping the climbing team down the mountain. Despite extensive search and rescue operations by the Pakistani military, Purja’s company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed that all members of the team lost their lives.

Nims Purja was internationally celebrated for completing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks in record time and for championing the achievements of Sherpa climbers in high-altitude mountaineering.

This report examines what happened on Broad Peak, the rescue efforts, and the legacy of one of the world’s most accomplished climbers.
