Andrey Vlasov remains one of the most controversial figures of the Second World War. Once celebrated as a Soviet general and one of the commanders associated with the defence of Moscow, he later became the leader of a movement that sought to overthrow Joseph Stalin’s regime with German support. To some, Vlasov represented a desperate attempt to create a non-communist Russia. To others, he became a symbol of collaboration during one of the most devastating conflicts in history. This documentary explores the life of Andrey Vlasov, the creation of the Russian Liberation Army (ROA), and the dramatic events that shaped its rise and fall.
Captured by German forces in 1942 after the destruction of the Soviet 2nd Shock Army, Vlasov agreed to support a Russian anti-Stalinist movement. Over the following years, he became the public face of the Russian Liberation Army, a force composed largely of Soviet prisoners of war and volunteers who opposed Stalin’s government. The film examines why thousands chose to join the movement, the difficult conditions faced by Soviet prisoners in German captivity, and the political promises made by Vlasov and his supporters as they sought to build an alternative future for Russia. The documentary also follows the role of Sergei Bunyachenko and the ROA’s military operations during the final months of the war. Particular attention is given to the Prague Uprising of May 1945, when Vlasov’s forces unexpectedly fought against German units and helped Czech resistance fighters defend parts of the city. Yet as the war drew to a close, hopes of finding protection in the West quickly disappeared. Using archival material, contemporary accounts, and historical research, this documentary examines loyalty, ideology, survival, and the difficult choices faced by individuals caught between two totalitarian systems. It is the story of a movement born from war, shaped by conflicting ambitions, and remembered as one of the most debated chapters of the Eastern Front.
