Chile: Storms leave five dead as floods devastate regions under state of catastrophe.

Severe winter storms and flooding have battered Chile, leaving at least five people dead and thousands affected across multiple regions. The government has declared a state of catastrophe in Atacama and Coquimbo as rescue teams work to reach isolated communities, restore essential services and assess widespread damage.

Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Chile, where authorities warn that more storm fronts are expected. Officials say the extreme weather, linked to an intense El Niño phenomenon, has caused major flooding, damaged infrastructure and disrupted hospital services, including at a facility in Ovalle where emergency support is being deployed.
