In August 1944, one year before the end of the Second World War, in German-occupied Belgium, the death of a local political figure set in motion a series of events that reflected the tensions of life under occupation. This documentary examines the life of Oswald Englebin, a member of the Rexist movement and mayor of Greater Charleroi, and the wider historical context in which he lived. Englebin rose to prominence during World War 2 as part of a collaborationist administration that worked alongside the German authorities. His position placed him at the centre of political life in the region at a time when Belgium was facing increasing pressure from occupation policies, resistance activity, and social division. On 17 August 1944, Englebin and his family were assassinated by members of the resistance. In the hours and days that followed, the situation in the region escalated rapidly. Measures were taken against the local population, and a number of civilians were detained and lost their lives. These events became one of the most significant episodes linked to collaboration and retaliation in Belgium during the war.
