You’re watching Middle East Matters on France 24. Why has Israel this week moved to officially recognize the Armenian genocide – the killing of around 1.5 million ppl by Ottoman Turks over a century ago? It’s not a question with easy answers. And the ripple effects could be widely felt…not just in Turkey, where president Erdogan has pointed to the allegations that Israel itself has committed a far more recent genocide in Gaza… but also in Azerbaijan, a key ally of both Israel and Ankara. And what of Armenia itself? Prime minister Nikol Pashinyan has refused to welcome the recognition…instead accusing Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Saar of ‘weaponizing’ the genocide. Our report is by Emerald Maxwell. Also on the show, we’ll get the Israeli view on this story with our Jerusalem correspondent Noga Tarnopolsky. And we welcome Amberin. She is the chief correspondent for Al Monitor, a Washington based independent news organization that covers the Middle East, where she closely covers Turkey and Armenia.
