South Korea’s Defence Ministry has announced a plan to train 500,000 “drone warriors,” giving every conscript the chance to earn drone piloting credentials during mandatory service. The plan also includes producing 110,000 drones by 2029. It’s a direct response to North Korea, whose troops have gained real combat experience fighting in Ukraine and are now returning home as instructors. But South Korean think tanks warn the plan lacks clear objectives, and that the country’s drone industry remains heavily dependent on Chinese parts. We break down the ambition and the obstacles.
