The Girl Who Traded Her Soul for a Nazi Villa and Champagne

Gretl Braun is often remembered simply as the younger sister of Eva Braun, Adolf Hitler’s long-time companion. Yet her life provides a revealing glimpse into the private world of the Nazi elite and the society that surrounded the dictator during the years of the Third Reich. Born in Munich in 1915, Gretl grew up in a middle-class family and entered Hitler’s circle through her sister’s relationship with him. What followed was a life spent among some of the most powerful figures in Nazi Germany. At the Berghof, Hitler’s mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps, Gretl became a familiar face. While war spread across Europe, she enjoyed the privileges of proximity to power, socializing with senior Nazi officials and members of the SS. Her ambition to establish her own place within this exclusive world eventually led her to Hermann Fegelein, a high-ranking SS officer whose career flourished within Hitler’s inner circle. Their wedding in June 1944, attended by Hitler and other leading figures of the regime, was one of the last grand social events of the Third Reich. Yet as Allied armies advanced and Germany’s military position deteriorated, the world that had elevated Gretl Braun began to unravel. Within less than a year, the Nazi regime had collapsed, her husband was gone, and her sister Eva Braun was dead. This documentary explores the life of Gretl Braun, from her early years in Munich to her place among the Nazi leadership and the dramatic events that accompanied the fall of Hitler’s Germany. Through her story, we gain a rare perspective on the personal relationships, ambitions, and loyalties that existed behind the closed doors of one of history’s most notorious regimes.
