This documentary explores the life and legacy of Roman Shukhevych, one of the most controversial figures of the Second World War in Eastern Europe. From his early involvement in Ukrainian nationalist movements to his role during the war, Shukhevych’s story reflects the complex and often divisive history of the region. Born in 1907 in what is now western Ukraine, Shukhevych grew up in a politically active environment shaped by nationalist ideas. As a young man, he joined underground organizations that sought independence for Ukraine, becoming deeply involved in their activities. Over time, he rose through the ranks and became a key figure within the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. During World War II, Shukhevych became associated with German military structures and took part in formations that operated alongside Nazi forces. These connections remain one of the most debated aspects of his life. As the war progressed, he later became a leading commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which operated in a region caught between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union . Under his leadership, the UPA carried out large-scale operations across parts of Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus. These actions had significant consequences for civilian populations and remain a subject of ongoing historical discussion. For some, Shukhevych is seen as a symbol of resistance against Soviet control; for others, his actions are linked to deeply controversial events during the war. After 1945, Shukhevych continued to lead an armed underground movement against Soviet authorities. His life came to an end in 1950 during a Soviet security operation. This video offers a balanced and fact-based look at Roman Shukhevych, examining his decisions, alliances, and lasting legacy in the broader context of World War II history.
