Massive blaze in Indonesia’s capital leaves hundreds of people homeless

More than 600 people have been left homeless after a fire swept through a densely populated neighbourhood in Kemayoran, central Jakarta. Hundreds of homes were destroyed in the blaze, which broke out on Monday night and rapidly spread through the area, forcing residents into emergency shelters.
Authorities deployed more than 30 fire trucks and over 100 personnel to bring the fire under control. Investigators are still working to determine the cause, though early indications suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit.
Displaced residents are now staying in temporary shelters where they are being provided with food, water and clothing, while others return to the site to search through the debris for belongings.
The fire highlights the recurring risk in Jakarta’s densely populated settlements, where closely packed housing and electrical faults often contribute to large-scale blazes.
