Nuremberg 1946: When Nazi “Lord of the East” Finally Had to Pay

Alfred Rosenberg was one of the principal ideologues of Nazi Germany and a central figure in the development of the racial and political doctrines that shaped the Third Reich. Born in the Russian Empire and radicalised by the upheavals of the Bolshevik Revolution, Rosenberg became an early member of the Nazi Party and one of the closest intellectual allies of Adolf Hitler. Through propaganda, political writing, and cultural policy, he helped spread antisemitism, anti-Bolshevism, and the idea of a racially ordered Europe under German domination. This documentary follows Rosenberg’s rise from émigré intellectual to one of the most influential officials in Nazi Germany. It explores his role in the failed Beer Hall Putsch, his influence on Nazi ideology during the Weimar Republic, and his relationship with senior Nazi leaders including Joseph Goebbels and Karl Dönitz. The film also examines Rosenberg’s involvement in the looting of cultural treasures across occupied Europe through the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg and his appointment as Reich Minister for the Occupied Eastern Territories after Operation Barbarossa. Using archival material and historical analysis, the documentary examines the German occupation of Eastern Europe, the administration of the Baltic region under Reichskommissariat Ostland, and the wider system of persecution implemented during the Second World War. It also looks at Rosenberg’s ministry’s connection to the Wannsee Conference and the policies directed against Jewish communities across occupied territories. The final part of the documentary follows the collapse of Nazi Germany, Rosenberg’s capture by Allied forces, and his trial before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, Alfred Rosenberg became one of the leading Nazi officials convicted after the war.
