The Delhi High Court has strongly criticized the Wrestling Federation of India over its remark on Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic exit and its decision to bar her from the Asian Games trials. The court called the federation’s stance “absolutely retrograde” and questioned how her Olympic final appearance could be described as a national shame.
The controversy has now widened into a larger debate over trial rules, maternity, dignity, and accountability in Indian wrestling. It seems the revised rules are being used as a tool for vengeance as Vinesh was a prominent face of the 2023 wrestlers’ sexual harassment protests against WFI former chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The High Court has now directed the Centre to ensure that Vinesh Phogat can participate in the May 30 trials under independent monitoring.
