Russian President Vladimir Putin has unveiled the RS-28 Sarmat nuclear missile, known in the West as ‘Satan Two’. Moscow says the intercontinental ballistic missile can travel more than 35,000 kilometres and carry multiple nuclear warheads aimed at separate targets. Putin claims the missile can evade existing missile defence systems and will enter combat service before the end of the year. The launch comes months after the New START nuclear arms treaty between Russia and the United States expired. Russia has also revised its nuclear doctrine and expanded its arsenal with hypersonic weapons, submarines, underwater drones and long-range missile systems.
