Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp.
About the story: Maximilian Grabner was one of the most feared SS officers at Auschwitz and a central figure in the machinery of terror that defined Nazi Germany’s occupation of Poland during the Second World War. Born in Vienna in 1905, Grabner joined the Nazi Party before the Anschluss and later became a member of the Gestapo and the SS. After Germany invaded Poland in 1939, he was assigned to the newly established Auschwitz concentration camp in 1940 as head of the Political Department. In this position, Grabner oversaw interrogations, investigations, prisoner records, and executions. Though not the camp commander, his authority was immense. Prisoners referred to him as the “God of Auschwitz” because he decided who would live and who would die. Under his supervision, torture in Block 11—the internal prison of Auschwitz—became systematic. Prisoners were beaten, suspended from poles, deprived of food and sleep, and forced to endure brutal interrogations. Grabner played a direct role in executions at the Auschwitz death wall between Blocks 10 and 11, where thousands were shot. He was also involved in selections and deception tactics connected to the early gassing operations using Zyklon B. Survivor testimonies describe how he calmed victims before they were sent to their deaths. His name became synonymous with cruelty within Auschwitz-Birkenau. Ironically, Grabner was arrested by the SS in 1943—not for mass murder, but for corruption and unauthorized killings. The internal Nazi trial collapsed as Germany’s military situation deteriorated. After the war, he was captured, extradited to Poland, and tried during the Auschwitz Trial in Kraków. In December 1947, Maximilian Grabner was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was executed by hanging in January 1948. His biography remains a chilling example of bureaucratic brutality inside the Nazi concentration camp system of the Third Reich.
