A severe winter storm named Hernando has hit the northeastern United States, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds and widespread disruption. Cities including New York, Boston and Philadelphia reported blizzard-like conditions, with some areas receiving more than 30 inches of snow. Roads were closed, public transport suspended and tens of thousands of homes lost power. More than 5,600 flights were cancelled one day and a further 2,000 grounded the next, leaving passengers stranded. Authorities declared states of emergency, deployed the National Guard and urged residents to stay indoors. Meteorologists described the system as a nor’easter that intensified into a bomb cyclone. Forecasters say another snow system could follow later this week.
