4 major football matches across Mexico were abruptly cancelled following the reported death of cartel boss El Mencho (Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader).
Two top-tier league fixtures — including men’s and women’s divisions — and two second-division matches were called off amid escalating violence.
An international friendly between Mexico and Iceland at Estadio Corregidora was also cancelled as security concerns intensified.
Authorities confirmed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, was wounded in Tapalpa and died en route to the capital. Following his death, cartel members allegedly torched vehicles and blocked roads across nearly a dozen states.
Guadalajara — a host city for the FIFA World Cup 2026 — reported heightened security measures. Estadio Akron is scheduled to host four World Cup matches, including fixtures involving South Korea.
Despite unrest, the Mexican Open in Acapulco is currently expected to proceed as planned.
The cartel was previously designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the Trump administration.
