Just one day before a deadly mine collapse in Rubaya, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Al Jazeera filmed hundreds of artisanal miners working underground, including Hakizimana Damaru.
The collapse buried the tunnels and left many miners missing, with no confirmation whether they are alive or dead. According to the military governor of North Kivu province, at least 200 miners were killed. The Congolese government and M23 rebels, who control the area, have accused each other over responsibility for the tragedy. M23 says it does not run the mine and that an investigation is underway.
Al Jazeera’s Alain Uaykani reports from Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
