Starbucks baristas across the US just staged one of the biggest strikes in the company’s history — and New York’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is backing them publicly.
On Red Cup Day, one of Starbucks’ busiest promotions of the year, more than 1,000 unionised workers from over 65 stores walked out, protesting stalled negotiations, low wages, understaffing, and high-pressure working conditions. For many baristas, this strike is the culmination of years of fighting for fair pay, predictable schedules, and a real contract.
Starbucks says it already offers competitive pay and benefits — but workers and union organisers argue the company’s latest proposals fall far short.
