Mumbai’s Longest Urban Tunnel to Cut Thane–Borivali Travel time to 15 Minutes!
FPJ On Ground brings you report from the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project — India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, now in its final construction stage.
Built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), this 11.8 km twin tunnel will connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway at Borivali, slashing travel time from over an hour to just 12–15 minutes.
The tunnel passes beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, ensuring minimal environmental impact thanks to the use of advanced Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) named ‘Nayak’ and ‘Arjuna’, manufactured in Chennai.
