Kishtwar Cloudburst Tragedy: Over 50 Dead, Rescue Mission Underway
A massive cloudburst struck the remote Chositi (Chashoti) village in Kishtwar district, Jammu & Kashmir on August 14, 2025, during the Machail Mata pilgrimage. As of August 15, official reports confirm at least 56 fatalities, over 300 injured, and more than 250 missing as flash floods swept through makeshift langar sites, shops, homes, and a security post, burying everything under mud and debris. Extensive rescue operations involving NDRF, SDRF, the Army, Police, and local volunteers are ongoing amid challenging terrain and disrupted communication. The Machail Mata yatra has been suspended, and authorities have cancelled cultural programs for Independence Day in the region. PM Modi, LG Manoj Sinha, and CM Omar Abdullah have pledged all possible assistance as the search continues.
