After US President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded with a stern message. While addressing a conference, PM Modi said that India will never compromise the interests of its farmers. He added that India is ready for the heavy price the country might have to pay for prioritising its interests. This came after Trump announced an additional 25% on Indian imports, taking the total to a staggering 50%, the highest the US has imposed on any country. The Trump administration has been targeting India over its purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine war. New Delhi has said that the move is strictly based on market factors and the country’s interests. China has backed India’s stand. India has also pointed out the US imports of Russian fertilisers and uranium.
