Pakistan is reportedly working on an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). These are long-range missiles that can fly over 5,500 kilometres. According to US intelligence agencies, this one could reach 48 out of 50 American states. American security agencies have been tracking this for years and they’ve raised concerns before. Islamabad insists the missile is meant as a deterrent against India — that its entire nuclear programme is India-focused. But US intelligence thinks otherwise. They believe the missile could be used to deter the United States itself. If Pakistan gets an ICBM, the US will have to treat it as a nuclear threat. Still, Washington continues to treat Pakistan as an ally. In fact, Donald Trump recently hosted Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Field Marshal. Trump had lunch with Munir and hasn’t stopped praising him since.
