In 1955, the new German military, the Bundeswehr, was created. Then, in 1957, it was decided to allow altered versions of WWII medals and decorations, like the famous Knight’s Cross, to be worn by serving soldiers and veterans alike. A whole range of WWII-era awards were reviewed and remade minus offensive symbols, and German soldiers once more could be seen wearing Iron Crosses and Wound Badges and many other familiar decorations.
