Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative party leader, gave another of what have become her signature speeches, which is to announce the intention of potentially announcing something at some point, but you’ll just have to find out what it might be.
This time it was the launch of a “Lawfare Commission”. She had come to the headquarters of a defence and security think tank in Westminster to explain that “lawfare is destroying our country”. This destruction urgently required the creation of a commission, which she hopes will tell her what to do about it, ideally some time around October.
Lawfare, for the uninitiated, is wrong’uns using the law to get out of the unpleasant things their government wants to do to them. The main thing they use is the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which Badenoch said she was “increasingly of the view” that the UK should leave — she just hasn’t quite yet decided. Leaving the ECHR, or maybe not leaving it but, who knows, maybe sending it an angry letter or something, would allow the UK to, she said, “take back control for real”.
