One of the most extraordinary D-Day last stands occurred near Utah Beach, when two German gun batteries put up a vigorous and coordinated resistance against advancing US infantry, including taking over 130 GIs prisoner. The German commander would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his actions. This is that unknown story to celebrate the 81st anniversary of Operation Overland.
